Fethiye
Outdoor, sports & travel guide
In Fethiye, the distance between the sea and the mountains is genuinely short. You can spend one day hiking the Lycian Way and the next diving or up on Babadağ. That is the real beauty of the region: you are not tied to a single activity.
Why Fethiye is a great outdoor destination
The best thing about Fethiye is that you aren’t stuck doing just one thing for your whole holiday. You can set out on a hiking route in the morning and swim in the afternoon, then dive the next day or head up to Babadağ. What’s more, most of these don’t require hours on the road.
Another advantage of the region is its long season. In summer, the sea and water sports take center stage. Spring and autumn, on the other hand, are much more comfortable for hiking. Walking the Lycian Way stages around Fethiye in the July heat is not a great idea; the same route feels completely different in October.
It would also be unfair to limit Fethiye to Ölüdeniz. Once Kayaköy, Faralya, Kabak and Göcek come into the picture, the character of the region keeps changing. One place is all about hiking, and a few kilometers on, diving, sailing or open-water swimming events take over.
That is why, when heading to Fethiye, it makes more sense to ask “what do I want to do?” rather than “what is there?”. That is exactly how we have organized the region below.

What’s where in Fethiye
Hiking routes in Fethiye
Fethiye is one of the best-known starting points of the Lycian Way. The stages running from Ovacık to Faralya and Kabak offer strong options for those who want to plan a multi-day hike. For those looking for a shorter route, the Kayaköy–Ölüdeniz stretch makes a good day trip.
Diving in Fethiye
The Gulf of Fethiye is one of Türkiye’s busiest regions for diving. The coastline offers a wide range of options, from wrecks to caves and from wall dives to calmer spots for getting started.
Beginners have more sheltered, shallow sites, and as you gain experience you can move on to deeper walls and wreck dives. That is part of what makes Fethiye great: even a handful of dives can take you to sites that are nothing alike.

When to go
There is no single “best month” for Fethiye. Summer is great for the sea, but if you plan to walk the Lycian Way, the July–August heat may not be much fun. If you want to both swim and hike, late May–early June and late September–October strike a much better balance.

Beyond the activities
What to eat in Fethiye
Fethiye cuisine sits between the Aegean’s herb culture and Muğla’s fishing tradition. The Tuesday market is the largest in the region: the right place for goat cheese, olive oil, pine honey and seasonal herbs.
After diving, the fish market; after hiking, Kayaköy’s village breakfast. What to skip: the menu boards along the seafront.
You pick your fish at the counter and have it cooked at one of the surrounding restaurants. A dinner classic in central Fethiye.
Small pieces of meat on thin skewers, served with lavash, onions and meze. One of the simple but reliable options you’ll often come across around Muğla.
One of the city’s classic stops for fresh vegetables, fruit and local produce. Go on Tuesday morning if you want to see the market when it is calmer.
- 04Ot kavurmasıDepending on the season, wild herbs go into the pan with olive oil or eggs. What ends up on the plate also depends a little on what turned up at the market.
- 05Babadağ keşkeğiOne of the local dishes of the Fethiye area; made by cooking wheat and meat slowly for a long time.
- 06Pine honey & goat cheeseYou’ll often come across them at breakfast and when shopping for local produce. They are among the Fethiye-Muğla flavors you can take home with you.
Restaurants in the guides
Modern Turkish cuisine centered on meze, at D-Marin Göcek. A Bib Gourmand pick that reinterprets classic Aegean flavors through more creative plates.
On Göcek Island, reached by a short boat ride. Modern Mediterranean cuisine built around open fire, dry-aged fish and seafood.
Set in Bedri Rahmi Bay, it brings together six different gastronomy concepts. Its broader, contemporary menu ranges from Aegean produce to Japanese cuisine.
A restaurant and boutique hotel in Turunç Pınarı Bay, reachable only by sea. Modern Mediterranean cuisine focused on seasonal, local produce and a farm-to-table approach.
The beach restaurant of D-Resort Göcek. It combines Aegean and Mediterranean cuisine with fresh fish, seafood and dishes from the wood-fired oven.
Seafood-focused cuisine near the marina in Fethiye. Its more original dishes, such as fish manti, lakerda and smoked mussels, set it apart from a classic fish restaurant.
Getting to Fethiye
The nearest gateway is Dalaman Airport. Shuttles are timed to domestic arrivals and drop passengers at Fethiye bus station; if you are renting a car, the offices are on the arrivals floor. Antalya has more flight options, but there is no direct shuttle to Fethiye, so you need to change at the bus station.
Intercity buses arrive at Fethiye bus station. Within the region, shared minibuses, known locally as dolmuş, run on the Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy, Göcek and Faralya–Kabak routes; since schedules change with the season, don’t leave your return trip until the last departure.
A car is the most flexible option for reaching Faralya, Kabak, the bays and dive departure points. The Faralya–Kabak road is narrow and winding, with occasional rockfalls; in Kabak, you leave the car above the bay. In summer, the Ölüdeniz road and parking lot fill up early. On the one-way stages of the Lycian Way, however, a car can be more hassle than help. Coming from Dalaman and the airport, you pass through the Göcek Tunnel, which has a toll. Car rental offices are on the arrivals floor of Dalaman Airport and in central Fethiye.
