01 — ABOUT SARIALAN

Why Sarıalan is a great outdoor destination

Say Uludağ and most people picture ski slopes and hotels. Sarıalan shows the calmer, greener side of the mountain, one you can explore on a day trip. You don’t need to ski or plan a long holiday to come here. Sometimes it’s enough to step off the cable car, head into the forest, walk for a few hours and leave Bursa’s heat behind.

Sarıalan, inside Uludağ National Park, is a high-altitude recreation area used for day trips, picnics, nature walks and camping. Its position on the cable car line makes it one of the easiest nature stops to reach on Uludağ. For anyone who wants mountain air without going all the way up to the Oteller hotel zone, it isn’t just a stopover on the way—it’s a destination in its own right.

SHORT ANSWER

A high-altitude forest and picnic area on the cable car line inside Uludağ National Park, offering mountain air on a day trip without skiing or a long holiday.

What is Sarıalan like?

Sarıalan is a highland area at an elevation of around 1,630 meters, where wide open spaces sit alongside dense forests. The surrounding landscape is dominated by pine and fir trees, with walking paths, picnic areas and several accommodation options. The weather here feels noticeably different from central Bursa. While the city can be oppressively hot in summer, Sarıalan offers cool shade and fresh mountain air. In spring and autumn, however, conditions can change within just a few hours.

This is not the kind of place that comes with a long checklist of landmarks to visit. Sarıalan’s real appeal is the way it slows the day down. People come here to spend time in the forest, take short walks and experience the quieter side of Uludağ instead of rushing from one attraction to the next.

Why visit Sarıalan?

Sarıalan’s greatest strength is how easy it is to reach. Although it sits relatively close to the city center, Bursa’s noise and crowds begin to fall away as soon as the cable car starts climbing. The view opens across the plain before the cabins rise above the forest canopy. That transition is an important part of the trip in itself.

While the Oteller hotel zone is known mainly for skiing, accommodation, and winter tourism, Sarıalan is more about the forest and spending an easy day outdoors. Families with children, visitors who do not want to tackle a long trail, anyone planning a picnic, and those seeing Uludağ for the first time can all find a pace that suits them here.

Another advantage is that Sarıalan is not tied to a single season. Snow covers the area in winter, summer turns it into a cool escape from the city, and fall brings mist and changing colors to the forest. Visit the same place in different months and it can feel like two completely different trips.

SHORT ANSWER

Forest walks, picnics, camping and photography, plus the roughly 3.8 km trail to Çobankaya for a longer day.

What can you do in Sarıalan?

WALKING

Walk through the forest

You do not need to choose a long, demanding route to enjoy a walk in Sarıalan. Short outings are possible along the forest roads surrounding the recreation area. For those looking for a more structured hike, Sarıalan connects with trails leading toward the Oteller hotel zone and Çobankaya. The officially recognized Sarıalan–Çobankaya trail is approximately 3.8 kilometers long, combining forest scenery with the sound of flowing streams.

Even if you are not planning to complete the entire trail, it is worth setting a turnaround time before you start walking. Darkness can arrive early beneath the trees, and fog can make similar-looking paths difficult to distinguish. Keeping an offline map on your phone is especially useful on quieter days.

PICNIC

Have a picnic and spend the day outdoors

Sarıalan is one of Uludağ’s designated day-use recreation areas. You can set up at a picnic table for a long breakfast, bring coffee in a thermos, or simply sit among the trees for a few hours. Sometimes the simplest plan is the best one here.

The area can become busy on weekends and hot summer days. Arriving early or visiting on a weekday is a better choice if you want a quieter experience. Rules covering fires and barbecues may change depending on the season, wildfire risk, and current restrictions, so check what is permitted before setting out.

CAMPING

Go camping

Sarıalan has designated areas for tent camping, as well as fixed accommodation options such as forest lodges. This gives visitors a choice between setting up their own camp and spending the night in greater comfort.

Even so, do not think of it as an urban campground. Because of the elevation, nights can be cool even in summer. Rain, wind, and sudden drops in temperature all need to be considered. The opening status of the campsite, reservation system, prices, and rules on fire use may change during the year, so check the latest information before you go.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Take photographs and watch the seasons change

Sarıalan is less about one grand viewpoint and more about the smaller moments inside the forest: sunlight filtering through the trees, cable-car cabins passing above the canopy, fog settling into open clearings, and the silence after snowfall. Fall brings strong yellow and red tones, while snow-covered trees create striking winter scenes.

Photographers do not need to stay close to the cable-car station. A few minutes away from the busiest areas, quieter paths and open spaces begin to appear. Avoid disturbing wildlife, leaving marked trails unnecessarily, or leaving anything behind.

ROUTES

Combine Sarıalan with Çobankaya and nearby routes

If you have enough time and fitness, you can extend your visit with a walk toward Çobankaya. It is another of Uludağ’s important camping and day-use areas. Sarıalan can work well as the starting point for a longer day, but the route length, ground conditions, and return transportation should be considered in advance.

It is also possible to continue to the Oteller hotel zone. But if Sarıalan is your main reason for visiting, there is no need to spend the day constantly changing vehicles and moving between stops. Part of the pleasure of being here is having the time to slow down in one place.

The line is drawn from the trail in OpenStreetMap: the first 900 m follow the road out of Sarıalan, then it joins the forest path and ends at the Çobankaya campsite. The official length is 3.8 km.

SHORT ANSWER

June to early September is the most comfortable time for picnics and short walks; fall brings color and winter brings snow, but winter calls for waterproof boots and warm layers.

When should you visit Sarıalan?

Spring

APRIL–MAY

Spring may already be in full swing in central Bursa during April and May, while traces of winter can still remain in Sarıalan. Melting snow may leave the ground muddy and the paths wet. It is a beautiful time to watch the forest return to life, but waterproof shoes and a spare pair of socks can make a noticeable difference.

Summer

JUNE–EARLY SEPTEMBER

The period from June to early September is usually the most comfortable for picnics and short walks. Sarıalan’s elevation keeps it cooler than the city center, but that advantage also attracts weekend crowds. Arriving early makes it easier to find a quiet spot and finish your walk before the weather has a chance to change later in the day.

Fall

LATE SEPTEMBER–EARLY NOVEMBER

From late September to early November, the forest enters one of its most colorful periods. The weather can be cool, misty, and occasionally wet. It is an excellent time for photography and a peaceful walk, but remember that the days are getting shorter and the ground may be slippery.

Winter

AFTER SNOWFALL

Snow transforms Sarıalan into a completely different place. It can be an impressive choice for a snow walk, enjoying the scenery, or simply escaping the city for a few hours. Everyday sneakers are not enough in winter conditions, however. You will need waterproof boots, warm layers, gloves, and spare clothing. Because both cable-car services and road access can be affected by the weather, check operating and road conditions before leaving.

SHORT ANSWER

The most enjoyable way up is the cable car from Teferrüç; by car it is about 31 km from central Bursa. Pack a light extra layer and a rain jacket even in summer.

How do you get to Sarıalan?

The most enjoyable way to reach Sarıalan is by taking the cable car from Teferrüç Station in Bursa. Sarıalan is one of the main stops on the line, making it possible to climb directly to a high elevation without a private vehicle. Operating hours may change because of wind, maintenance, or weather conditions, so check the current service status before buying a ticket.

You can also reach the area by car using the Uludağ road. Sarıalan is approximately 31 kilometers by road from central Bursa. Snow chains, winter tires, and current road conditions become particularly important in winter. Leaving early also makes for a more relaxed trip on busy weekends, when traffic and parking can become an issue.

What should you bring?

Even on a summer day, it is a good idea to pack a light extra layer and a rain jacket. The weather on Uludağ can be cooler and more changeable than the forecast for central Bursa suggests. For a short visit, water, a small snack, sunscreen, a trash bag, and hiking shoes with reliable grip should be enough.

For a longer walk, add an offline map, a power bank, a headlamp, and a small first-aid kit. In winter, you will also need waterproof boots, a hat, gloves, and spare socks. Sarıalan may be easy to reach, but it is still a high-altitude mountain environment.

For a comfortable day trip, take the cable car up in the morning, begin with a short walk, and then spend some time in the picnic area. Anyone planning to camp should also check the current status of the facilities and the expected nighttime temperature. Avoid leaving your return until the final cable-car service, as that can create unnecessary stress at the end of the day.
