Ski resort

AbalıVan

Abalı is a ski resort in Van province. The highest point reached by the lifts is 2,414 m and the base is 1,889 m, giving a vertical drop of 525 m. The resort has 2 lifts. Snow depth comes from the measuring station of the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM); temperature, wind and new-snow forecasts come from the Open-Meteo model. The elevations are not the figures the resort advertises — they were measured from the lift lines.

Opening uncertain

It is unclear whether this resort has opened for the season.

For the last few seasons this resort has opened late because its operating tender was not completed; in the 2025-26 season it was closed in December despite there being snow, and only opened mid-season. Check the resort's own announcement before you go.

The snow and weather values below show the conditions, but they do not confirm that the resort is operating that day; the badges separate measured from modelled values. Check the resort’s own announcement before you set off.

Caution

The freezing level is above the summit as well: any precipitation may fall as rain, though snow is not ruled out entirely.

Snow on the ground does not mean the resort is open; check the resort’s own announcement before you set off.

Hello everyone! Abalı is a ski resort south of Van, close to the city. But writing this page, the thing I had to dwell on most was not its snow — it was whether it would be open at all.

The range we measured is 1,889–2,414 metres, a drop of 525 metres. For a resort with two lifts that is genuinely a good figure; for comparison, Uludağ‘s drop is 359 metres. So the mountain itself is not small; the problem is not on the mountain.

Read This Before You Go

Abalı has not opened regularly in recent seasons: because of problems with the operating tender and permits, the facility started both the 2024-25 and the 2025-26 seasons late. The reason I have put this at the very top of the page is this: setting off because the snow depth looks good and coming back to a closed gate is a real possibility at this resort. The snow measurement you see in the table above is correct — but a measurement is one thing and the resort being open is another. Check the two separately.

Who It’s For

A 525-metre drop and a 2,414-metre summit are satisfying for an intermediate skier. Two lifts is few; on a crowded weekend you have to accept queueing. If you live around Van, or want to set aside a day while you are in the city, it is a sensible choice.

When to Go

The base is at 1,889 metres and the summit at 2,414; it is not a resort with problems holding snow. January–February is the most stable period. But we come back to the same place: rather than the calendar, look at whether the facility is operating that season.

Frequently asked questions

About Abalı

Is it open this season?
I cannot tell you that from this page. The resort’s situation changes from season to season and we have marked its operating status as “uncertain” in the table above. Before you set off, confirm with the Van Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism or from current news.
If there is snow, can I assume it is open?
No. At the start of the 2025-26 season there was snow on the mountain, yet the facility was closed because of a permit problem.
Where does the snow depth information here come from?
It is the value measured by the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) at its station in the resort. New snow, the temperature difference and the snowmaking window are calculated from a model and labelled separately in the table.
