About this site

In the Marmara earthquake of 17 August 1999 the shoreline of Çınarlık Square in the Değirmendere neighbourhood sank into the sea; a hotel, the ferry pier, a tea garden and some houses went under. About 180 metres off the shore, over an area lying between 18 and 55 metres, uprooted plane trees, tea-garden umbrellas, street lamps and the remains of counters still stand. It is one of the areas dived today.
